Oral Immunotherapy and Food Allergy Treatment- OIT
What foods do we treat? Peanut, Milk, Tree nuts, Egg, Soy, Wheat, Sesame seed, potentially other foods can be discussed.
What age can OIT be started at? The patient should be at least 3 years of age, 4-5 years of age is the most common on the younger end. The is never TOO old to start.
Am I/is my child too allergic to do OIT?
There is no such thin as too allergic. Any person who
has a food allergy (IgE antibody mediated) is a candidate.
Many question if this procedure is FDA approved. OIT does not utilize a medical device or medication and therefore does not fall under the purview of the FDA and it will not approved or disapproved by the FDA.
Why are there not more allergists performing this procedure?
-OIT, although well studied for decades, there is not a consensus of a standard protocol to follow.
-Many allergists do not have the experience or perform oral food challenges.
-The primary researchers, despite a decade of strong clinical positive results, have not promoted OIT as ready for general treatment.
Why has the Allergy and Asthma Institute started offering OIT?
- There are more than 80 journal articles published in the leading allergy journals around the world all showing success with this therapy (see links to published journal articles).
-Hundreds of successful patients fully treated with an over 80% completion rate.
-The risk of reactions to OIT are equal to or less than strict avoidance.
-Studies and personal experience has proven a significant improvement of the quality of life.
-Dr. Mayer grew up with food allergies and has the first hand experience of the difficulties living with a food allergy.

*We recommend a consult to sit down and discuss if OIT is right for you or your child. We fully discuss any possible outcomes, success, failure, possible adverse outcomes. We also discuss anxieties/fears involved with considering OIT.
* Our goal is to treat and to substantially improve the quality of life in food allergic kids and adults.
* We pledge an open and honest discussion on food allergies and treatment.
* OIT has been extensively studied with many successful clinical trials performed at Duke, Johns Hopkins, Mount Sinai, and many of the other top allergy institutions around the world.
*Hundreds of children and adults have successfully completed OIT supervised by board certified allergists across the country and around the world over the last 100 years (most over the last 10 years).
*Over 100 patients have completed the current protocol we are utilizing, with many more in process of completing.
